Duties and Responsibilities
The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (UN RCO) in Zambia provides inter-agency coordination support to the UN Country Team and its various sub-groups. The support includes leadership and coordination in strategic planning, programme and operations management, policy guidance, as well as knowledge management, advocacy and communications, all seeking to enhance UN coherence and improve overall programme impact to better achieve results. The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Zambia, under the leadership of the Resident Coordinator, is in a crucial moment of implementing its United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2023-2027, which guides the partnership between the Government of the Republic of Zambia and the United Nations System in Zambia for 05 years. The UNSDCF 2023-2027 is fully aligned with Zambia’s 8th National Development Plan (8NDP) and the Agenda 2030 to support the country achieving the SDGs. The position is in the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (UN RCO) in Lusaka, Zambia. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of the Head of Office in the UNRCO, and will assist the office in Programme work related to Sustainable Development and support to the UNSDCF 2023-2027 implementation and coordination.

Responsibilities
1. Governance, Peace and Development
• Carry out and support research and/or analysis on the relevant thematic areas.
• Assist in identifying areas of programmatic engagement with key stakeholders related to social cohesion, electoral processes, dialogue, conflict prevention, and consensus-building.
• Support mappings and analysis of civil society actors, including youth, women, and marginalized groups, and their capacities for conflict prevention/ peacebuilding, and political party dialogue.
• Support identification of strategic linkages between climate change impacts on peace and development.
• Support in political environment analysis.
• Support organization of activities, events or interventions that help building relationships with development partners and key stakeholders, focusing particularly on engaging with civil society actors, academia, and others.

2. Human Rights and Gender Equality
• Support the Human rights interventions and activities, in terms of advocacy, policy dialogue, awareness raising or others.
• Support the engagement with government officials and other stakeholders to advocate for human rights.
• Support drafting of analytical papers and reports, contribute to key UN documents, including communication materials, as needed.
• Support UN interventions aiming at mainstreaming gender equality and women’s empowerment.
• Support any other activities or interventions from the UNRCO, aiming at enhancing sustainable development and the coordination and implementation of the UNSDCF.

Qualifications/special skills
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.

Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Preferred studies: Holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Sustainable development, human rights, law, political studies, gender or a related field.

– Good interpersonal skills and a personal commitment to the Principles and Values of the United Nations Charter.
– Good communication skills, including the ability to draft documents in a clear and concise manner.
– No prior professional experience is required, although any experience of relevance will be an advantage.
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme, although any professional experience in the relevant areas for this internship are an asset.
